Lesson 34: Words of Amount and Time

  • One thousand kilometers is beyond my imagination.
  • One million pesos is enough for a small structure.
  • One half of you is mine.
  • 2 gallons is enough.

  • Two-thirds of the students are satisfied with their grades. (Since the presence of the noun 'students' indicates that there are more than just one student, therefore we use 'are').
  • The five-peso bills were taped to the wall. (Since the presence of the noun 'bills' indicates that there are more than just one 5-peso bill, therefore we use 'were').

Exercise:


Choose the appropriate verb in the following sentences:


1.) Three minutes (was, were) all the time the director would give us to get ready.

2.) Six pounds and two ounces (is, are) the weight of the newborn baby.

3.) Eight kilometers (seem, seems) a long way when you are walking.

4.) Half of the people in town (is, are) afraid of that criminal.

5.) Ten dollars (is, are) all the money that I have left.
